Reflection of Final Work

After discussing with my tutor, I decided to readjust my project 3. Firstly, there is no clear expression of my ideas in my animation. Secondly, this kind of animation which introducing history and designers are failed to arouse the interest of the audience, thus making my work more boring. Rather than reflecting my personal feelings about the typeface, I think I should create from the background history of the typeface. In a previous reflection I mentioned how Tre Seals created typeface Martin, he was highlighting a piece of history from a specific undescribed race, ethics, or gender. After my research, I finally chose the most famous historical background about typeface Martin. Luther King Jr. used typeface Martin to make posters for his speech. Martin Luther King Jr. was an American minister and activist, one of the leaders in the civil rights movement. He advanced civil rights for people of color in the United States through nonviolence and civil disobedience. I first sketched out my idea of recreating the most iconic historical events of the time in plaster and foam board. Two hands held up boards with protest words in the typeface Martin. I used the Internet to find the comments people wrote during the protest marches and then cut them out of black paper and pasted them on white foam boards. The next step was to finish the plaster part. I tried different materials and had many failed experiments. I first came up with the idea of using clay to shape the upper body of the human body and then painting it after drying. However, after trying, I found that this method needs to use a lot of clay, and to restore and match the foam board's size, the human's upper body needs to be made huge. It was very challenging because I had never tried to finish a work with clay before. After this failure, I began to wonder if there was a new material that could replace clay. After choosing, I chose to pour out the shape of my hand using an inverted mold. I purchased two copies of the hands-casting 3D kit from the website. However, the first attempt was a failure. After stripping, I found that my mold was too small to fit the foam board in, so I tried again. The result of the second attempt was good, and after waiting for the mold to dry completely, I chose to paint it to a black skin tone. This was to fit better the representative image of Luther King Jr., who is black. Once the color was dry, I combined the two parts of the sculpture to create the final piece.
